Caution is warranted in interpreting this Indicator as categories for race and ethnicity classifications have changed over time. The category “Two or More Races” was not included in 1980. In 2016, in the population figures by the Census Bureau, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders were classified separately from Asians and were 0.2 percent of the U.S. population. The inclusion of the “Two or More Races” category likely reduced the percent of persons who classified themselves as Black, American Indian/Alaska Native or Asian.
